Have you checked the email address for you that is displayed on Facebook? Recently Facebook made one of those “little changes” that it does from time to time that seems innocuous at first glance. The result of this change is that your email address is shown as a facebook.com email address rather than the one that you have always used.
There have been reports of users discovering that emails have gone missing but of more concern to many people is that Facebook has created email accounts that users did not want nor wish to use. I have posted a pic of my contact details as an example. As you can see it shows my email address to be a Facebook address. The address is based on your Facebook username and emails are sent via Facebook messages.
You may want to leave it like that, if you don’t, here’s what to do:
- Access your profile’s Timeline and click on About
- Click on “Edit” in Contact info
- Click on the down arrow furthest away from your Facebook email address. You should get drop down that gives you the option to show on your timeline
- Click on “hidden on timeline”
- Now choose the equivalent down arrow on your existing email address
- Click on “Shown on timeline”
- Click on “Save” at the bottom of the page
- Your original email address has now been restored
Some people will be unhappy with Facebook for doing this but then a lot of people need to realise that Facebook is a business and needs to look for ways to make money, one of the most important ways it will be able to monetise is by keeping you in the Facebook environment as much as possible in order for them to serve more ads to you that generate revenue for Facebook. So it makes sense for them to try to make Facebook your first point of call for any sort of online activity. Facebook would also point out that they are a social based company and that they are trying to streamline your life to make it easier for you to keep in touch with those you are closest to.
Facebook have a tendency to try to make these changes without really pointing out what they have changed and people can get a little peeved with it. However, Facebook generally make it easy to put things back the way they were. So if you have had your email address changed and you want to change it back you now know what to do!
